Museu Frederic Marès

If you love art and antiques, you got to love this museum. The Marès Museum -both unknown and amazing- it's located in the middle of the Barri gòtic (gothic quarter), in one part of the old Royal Palace of the Counts of Barcelona. You will find it next to the Cathedral, by the Sant Iu façade. When crossing the door, one gets to a charming medieval courtyard, with archs and a fountain. A nice café is open during spring and summer in this patio surrounded by peace and history.

The museum houses works of art and pieces of collecting, divided by several floors and rooms. Among the works of art we can find a great sculpture collection from Romanesque to Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and other styles. We can also find paintings, altarpieces, sarcophagus, and even part of the façade of a real Romanesque church. In the Collector's Cabinet we can admire another kind of art: billions of little collecting pieces delicately organized in 17 rooms. We find photography, daguerreotype images, match boxes, fans, pipes, jewels, miniatures, old ads, watches, dolls, toys, and other objects mostly from the XIX century.

All the works of art and objects displayed in this museum belonged to Frederic Marès, a great Catalan sculptor who created plenty of monumental art for Barcelona. Marès was an art and collecting lover, and he gathered so many pieces that he finally decided to create his own museum, lately donated to the government of Barcelona.

Very few people know this museum, so it's normal to find its rooms full of peace, contributing to feel the atmosphere of Frederic Marès universe, and that nostalgia that you can sometimes feel for a past that you haven't lived. The price for the ticket is really affordable, being possible to re-enter during the next three months. The staff is great, always willing to help you. May others take note!

Si amas el arte y las antigüedades, amarás este museo. El Museu Marès -tan desconocido como fascinante- se encuentra en pleno Barri gòtic (Barrio gótico), en una parte del antiguo Palacio Real de los Condes de Barcelona. Lo encontrarás junto a la Catedral, accediendo por la portada de Sant Iu. Al cruzar la puerta se accede a un encantador patio con arcadas y una fuente. Cuando llega el buen tiempo, se abre el café del museo en este patio rodeado de paz e historia.

En el museo se exponen obras de arte y de coleccionismo, divididas por distintas plantas y grandes salas. Entre las obras de arte encontramos una gran colección de escultura del románico, gótico, renacimiento, barroco, etc. Entre estos y otros estilos encontramos también pinturas, retablos, sarcófagos, o incluso la portada de una auténtica iglesia románica. En el gabinete del coleccionista se concentra otro tipo de arte: millones de pequeños objetos de coleccionismo de todo tipo, ordenados minuciosamente en 17 salas. Encontramos fotografía, daguerrotipos, cajas de cerillas, abanicos, alhajas, miniaturas, anuncios, relojes, armas, muñecas, juguetes,  y otros objetos que en su mayoría pertenecen al siglo XIX.

Todas las obras y objetos expuestos en el museo pertenecieron a Frederic Marès, un gran escultor que realizó numerosas obras monumentales para Barcelona. Marès fue un apasionado del arte y el coleccionismo, llegando a reunir tantas obras, que finalmente optó por crear su propio museo, que después legó al Ayuntamiento de Barcelona.

Poca gente conoce este museo, por lo que es normal encontrar sus salas llenas de paz, propiciando el clima ideal para respirar el universo de Frederic Marès, y aquella nostalgia que se siente a veces por un pasado que no hemos vivido. El precio de la entrada es muy asequible, y se puede volver a entrar con ella durante un tiempo después. Las fotos están permitidas, y el personal del museo es encantador. Que otros tomen nota.
